Mary Jane And Marwa Christmas Online Challenge
Challenge Four
What is often the traditional Christmas Day meal in Japan?
In Japan, Christmas is a commercial, romantic holiday, sort of like Valentine's Day is celebrated in the United States. Gifts are exchanged, a special strawberry and whipped cream Christmas cake is served, and couples have special dinners together. Traditionally, this is celebrated on Christmas Eve, December 24th. Neither the 24th nor the 25th is an official holiday though, so people are still expected to go to work and school on both days.
A previous answerer mentioned that Christmas is a 'universal' holiday, and always celebrated on December 25th. Not true! Only countries with majority Christian populations mark Christmas as an official holiday. Countries like Japan, where less than 1% of the holiday is Christian, don't consider it official. For that matter, December 25th is an arbitrary date: no one knows for sure when Jesus Christ was born, so the actual date it's celebrated is more a matter of custom, rather than religion.

Mattak, a special delicacy, is eaten in Greenland at Christmas. What is mattak made from and what do people say it tastes like?
n the villages of Polar Inuits, families like to visit each other and have parties. They drink coffee and eat cakes and exchange brightly wrapped parcels. Traditional presents are model sledges, a pairs of polished walrus tusks, or sealskin mitts. Everyone in the village gets a gift and children go from house to house, singing songs.
On Christmas Eve, Church Services are held and most people go to them, many in national costume. Some men wear the white anoraks which are worn on special occasions

In Holland, what do children leave in their shoes as a gift for Sinterklaas's horse?
For children, this means they can put their shoe next to the chimney or back door. At night, Sinterklaas rides across the rooftops on his white horse Amerigo and places little treats or gifts in the children's shoes, assisted by his helpers, the Peters. Traditional sweets are gingerbread men, spiced biscuits, marzipan and chocolate letters. Satisfy your sweet tooth and buy these sweets at any supermarket or bakery.

Christmas trees are not commonly used in Greece.
What is the main symbol of the season in most Greek homes?
Christmas trees are not commonly used in Greece. In almost every home the main symbol of the season is a shallow wooden bowl with a piece of wire is suspended across the rim; from that hangs a sprig of basil wrapped around a wooden cross. A small amount of water is kept in the bowl to keep the basil alive and fresh.
